Existence is then separate from humans themselves, and in order to be â€Å"free,† one cannot be bound to the world of cycles. Such is the vagueness of the philosophy. Grendel, in his journey, parallels this journey as he ventures outside his lair and breaks the physical barrier that exists between his world at the outside world, which was the body of water filled with sea dragons. During Grendel’s first encounter with humans, he realizes that he is very much like them, with the only differences being the way he looks and the way he grew up in isolation. It can be argued that the reason for Grendel’s anger and actions in the rest of the book can be rooted in the isolation and alienation he felt when the humans shut him out as he tried communicate, since they both spoke the same language. The humans’ instinctual expressions of hate towards the different creature may be the tipping point that catalyzed Grendel’s need to find out the meaning of his existence, as if it were different from anyone else’s. Hence Grendel’s need to find where he really belongs. Grendel’s isolation allowed him to observe the world as a third party, as if his being was independent of the world’s mechanics. Multiple times in the novel, Grendel criticizes the cyclic nature of the universe, shown through his frustration with the ram that kept attacking him, the mountain goat that was determined to climb the mountain regardless of the impossibility, and the humans that killed for no reason. Grendel, preventing himself from succumbing to this cyclic nature, ventured to find meaning to his existence that had nothing to do with the stupidity, as he thought, of the world. The only thing he knew for certain was that he was alone. He says, â€Å"I understood that the world was nothing; a mechanical chaos of casual, brute enmity on which we stupidly impose our hopes and fears. I understood that, finally and absolutely, I alone exist† (Gardner, 22). This idea of existential absurdity allows for Grendel to define the values of his life that separate h im from the rest of the world and its mechanics that others succumb to (Burnham). The only thing that matters to him is his own existence, as he is the only one that can shape and give meaning to his life. Perhaps the meaning that Grendel gave to his own life was the determination to figure out why he existed. While Grendel felt confused at multiple points in the novel, the reason he kept living the way he did was because his goal was to figure out the meaning to his existence. Unlike the dragon, who retired from a normal life to â€Å"sit on gold† (Grendel, Chapter 5), Grendel kept observing the world to find the answers to his own life. Unlike nihilists, he had a reason to live and reason behind the things he did. For example, when Grendel wreaks havoc in the mead hall to encounter the Queen, a symbolism for innocence and faith, he did not kill her despite his ability to. He says, â€Å"I have not committed the ultimate act of nihilism: I have not killed the queen† (Gardner, 93). Grendel reflects on this possibility and concludes that there simply is no benefit to killing Queen Wealtheow. Killing her would prove acknowledgement in the faith that Grendel opposes, giving in to a nihilist nature that denies any reason behind the world. The recurring idea throughout the novel is that Grendel knows there is a reason to his existence, and he lived to figure it out. Until his death, Grendel recognizes that the reason behind his loss was not a result of his weakness, but rather an â€Å"accident.† While he fights, he says, â€Å"My sanity has won. Perhaps this is the way he fulfilled his existential life goal: to not be a part of nature, and die separate of it. The beauty of existentialism is that is allows us to turn life into what it is not, allowing us to fill the pages of a book that is only known to us. In his vast sea of loneliness and the love that his cruel world deprived him of, Grendel found the reason to his own being, to not fall into the set path that nature guides for everyone else. Existentialism allows for one to define the meaning of their own life, allowing them to choose the way they live and create their own guidelines for their existence, aside from societal values and religious expectations. Disappointment and unhappiness is rooted in failure to meet expectations that are set too high in the first place; however, setting one’s own expectations of how they want to live solves the problem of unhappiness before it can even happen. What Do We Know About Emily Dickinson - Free Essay Example

Emily Dickinson Essay Growing up Dickinson was a rebel she rebelled in matters of religions and social prosperity. When Emily was younger she secretly created bundles of poetry and wrote hundreds of letters. Emily Dickinson was born December 10,1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts where she lived nearly her entire life. She died on May15th, 1886. Dickinson died of kidney disease. She was 55 years old when she died. Her parents were Samuel Dickinson and Emily Norcross. The couple had three children William Austin, Lavinia Norcross and middle child Emily. Dickinson and her siblings were very close growing up they always depended on each others. Emily Dickinson had a strange relationship with both of her parents. She never moved out of her familys home. Her and her mother did not always have the best relationship. Emilys mother was a stay at home mom and made sure that everything got done around the house. Samuel Dickinson emilys father worked as It wasnt until her mother got very ill till they had a good relationship. As her mother got very ill she needed a lot of help and support. Emily Dickinsons parents were big into the farming and having everything being done at home. Dickinson ended school in her teenage years to help on the homestead. After helping on the homestead for several years she finally went back to school and she attended Amherst Academy (college) for seven years then attended Mount Holyoke female seminary for a year. After she finished college is when she really started her writing. While she was in school is enjoyed it and made she is would finish on top. Schooling was very important to her when she finally went back. All of Dickinsons teachers knew that she had so much potential and knew that should could go far and had a huge desire to succeed. As Dickinson got older she got better about getting out of the house. Dickinson never got married or had any children that was just something she was not into. She never thought having kids was really for her. Dickinson did help out a lot with her nieces and nephews she loved be able to watch them grow up. As she grew older she spent a lot of time at her brothers house because her best friend married her brother. As Dickinson began to get older she ended up getting kidney disease at age 55 and it killed her. Her death was a big impact on her family and the world. Dickinson inspired many of the time in America. She was also one of the most famous early female poets ever which added to the womens rights movement. Dickinson had a very driven mind. She had her heart on something and wasnt letting it go till it was complete. Some of her poems reflect on her loneliness and sadness. She went through a lot of hard times in her life but she always reflected it back on her writing. She never let anyone know she was hurting or suffering till she wrote about it. Dickinson started writing at a very young age and thats the reason she had such a big drive for it. Some of the poems Dickinson wrote were Hope is the thing with feathers, I felt a Funeral, in my Brain, Tell all the truth but tell it slant. You can tell by the name of the titles that she writes about special events or something that has impacted her in many ways. Dickinson always wrote things that other people could relate to. People could always read her poems are relate to things that are going on in there life. Looking through some of these poems I can see where I can relate to certain things in them. Even after Dickinson passed away her best friend made sure her work didnt go away. The poems that she hadnt totally finished were still published. My opinion on Emily Dickinson is that she seemed like a very hard worker and if she set her mind to something she made sure it got done and that it was successful. It is amazing to me that she kept her feelings in till and not express herself till she wrote her poems. She was very independent person and always wanted to do better. She always made her writing stick out where people wanted to read it. You could tell that she wanted people to look up to her and wanted to be known as someone people looked up to and wanna be known as someone that and changed things for the better. One of my favorite quotes from Emily was Saying nothing sometimes says the most. This quote to me means that silence can have more of a meaning than words. You should not always have to say something for someone to realize that something has happened or changed or that you have done something wrong.This quote makes a big impact on my life. The Drinking Age For many reasons, the drinking age has been set at twenty-one years old, but has the time come to lower the drinking age? Many argue that the drinking age needs to be lowered back to eighteen for many reasons; however, studies and statistics show that lowering the drinking age is harmful and even deadly. Some people believe that binge drinking can be solved by lowering the drinking age, but lowering the drinking age is not the solution to binge drinking. Many teenagers spend their weekends partying and getting drunk anyway, so lowering the drinking age will not stop young people from drinking. In fact, lowering the drinking age will increase the number of binge drinkers. Ultimately, the portrayal of this choice reveals the opinion that those who succumb to evil rather than accept death are weak and worthless men, while those who attempt to defy death by choosing to resist evil such as the Kurtzes and the protagonists, are noble. All men exposed to the jungle unequivocally fall to one fate or the other. The group is described by the protagonist Marlow as having no moral purpose at the back of it than there is burglars breaking into a safe (Conrad, 27). This observation that Marlow makes is expressed as an analogy; it is read as the expedition trying to find ivory is analogous to burglars breaking into a safe in terms of moral purpose. Marlow attempts to explain the twisted morality he sees in the expedition, refusing to abandon the hope that the white men were still civilized by trying to relate them to a kind of person who would exist in European society the burglar. In doing so he keeps himself in the civil ground, foreshadowing how he must inevitably be afflicted by the death/disease that results in such a choice. The Expeditions value of their life over their morality is shown again when they hear shrieking sounds in the fog they were greatly discomposed and trembling (Conrad, 36) at the sounds, in contrast with Marlow, who is not fearful of death, and the black crewmen who are native to the moral climate and to the situation that is so unfamiliar to the white men. The style shows Marlow, standing idle and bemused by the juxtaposition between panicking civilized/white men and calm savage/black men. The irony in the situation incites a cynical view towards those white men who are so afraid of death, and gives the opinion that men who chose evil over death are weak and useless as opposed to Marlow, the morally good hero who is the only one capable of saving the day. In Apocalypse Now, the choice given to the characters is the same madness and inhumanity or death. During the scene when a soldier attempts to helicopter his wounded friend to safety, his act of civility and humanity is punished by a Vietnamese woman who throws a grenade into the helicopter, causing a painful death to the soldier and his wounded comrade. This scene exemplifies how nice men end up dying when they try to apply their western standards of morality and good to the situation in Vietnam. The poems she did write were positive propaganda poems for the war; her objective was to stimulate patriotism in the readers so that the men would join the forces. Pope wrote a persuasive poem where she compared war to a game. This is illustrated in the title Whos for the game? It shows that her attitude to war was that it was a great big event that everyone should take part in one way or another. The title is a short and punchy question inviting anyone to answer. This gives the wrong impression of the war, it is misleading and Jessie Pope either intentionally or mistakably. Pope was ridiculed for doing this, but if she did write the actual reality of war, no one would really want to join, therefore the aim of the poem would not be fulfilled and the British army would have no chance of wining in the war. Stanza one begins again by referring to the war as a game for the above reason and also emphasises that it is the biggest game ever known, war is not a game where you may loose points but where it is likely to loose a limb or loose your life.
